Men's Soccer Wins 2021 CUNYAC Championship, Earn NCAA Berth!

The Baruch College Bearcats are the CUNYAC Men's Soccer Champions, defeating Lehman College in penalty kicks, 3-1, in the 2021 championship final on Saturday evening at Brooklyn College. With the win, Baruch earns the league's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship. The selection show is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

After 110 minutes of action, the conference title came down to five rounds of penalty kicks. The top-seeded Lightning made their first penalty kick attempt, but failed to convert on their next three shots, while the second-seeded Bearcats missed on their first try but successfully converted on their next three attempts to secure their seventh conference championship in program history and first since 2018.

"I'm just proud of the championship," said Baruch head coach, Dima Kamenshchik. "Not only because it's a championship in itself, but because of everything the guys put into this. Not having the 2020 season and coming off of the pandemic, the team put in so much hard work to really get to this point, and I'm just really proud of the team more than the championship itself."

Baruch goalkeeper Kellen Sala was named the game's Most Valuable Player, making six saves, including a critical stop in penalty kicks to preserve the victory.

Baruch, coming off a 1-0 victory over No. 3 CCNY in the semifinals, scored the game's first game in the 23rd minute. Bianco Bambaren played a ball into the box, which was corralled by Luis Munoz for the left-footed finish into the netting for his first goal of the season.

Needing a goal to save its season, Lehman scored the equalizer in the 86th minute. On a free kick opportunity, Eduardo Victorio slipped a low right-footed shot through the Bearcats' wall on a pass from Mubarak Ouro, the 2021 CUNYAC Player of the Year, from 25 yards out.

Baruch nearly took the lead one minute later on a shot from Jaedon Seneca, but his shot bounced off the left post.

In the first overtime period, CUNYAC All-Star Cormac Foley had an opportunity in the 97th minute but his shot sailed high. The all-conference performer had another good look in the 106th minute, but all-league goalkeeper Demiraldo Grunasi made a terrific stop to keep the score tied.

The two teams combined for 41 shot attempts and 16 corner kick opportunities in the match.
