Men's Volleyball Defeats Hunter in Exciting CUNYAC Showdown (30-26, 30-26, 24-30, 30-26)

The Baruch College Bearcats defeated the Hawks of Hunter College in four in a CUNY Athletic Conference battle for first place on Tuesday night in the ARC Arena.
 
With the victory, Baruch (26-9, 13-0) officially clinches first place in the overall conference standings, while Hunter (19-14, 11-2) takes second place.
 
The highly anticipated match between the two fierce conference rivals drew a season-high 327 fans to Baruch’s ARC Arena. Baruch and Hunter are separated by only six stops on the Lexington Avenue #6 subway line. 
 
Baruch jumped out to the 2-0 lead on consecutive 30-26 victories, but the Hawks bounced back in dominant fashion by taking the third set, 30-24.
 
However, following the break, Baruch scored the first five points of the fourth set and carried the early momentum for the 30-26 victory.
 
“Baruch versus Hunter volleyball matches are always exciting and tonight was no different,” said Head Coach Allison Gunther. “We limited their attack and totaled a season-high 60 digs. We played a much stronger match compared to our first meeting of the season against Hunter.”
 
Pablo Oliveira led the Bearcats with 16 kills and Danial Levent had 15 kills to provide the necessary one-two punch against the Hawks. Matt McKee had 10 kills with a solid hitting percentage of .400.
 
Radu Wyrwas had 52 assists in the four-set victory to go along with five kills and eight digs.
 
Shandu Foster was impressive for the visiting Hawks by notching 18 kills, while Eric Barty contributed 12 kills and six total blocks. 
 
Zacarias Ripoll dished out 44 assists and collected eight total digs in keeping Hunter alive all evening in the match. Jerin Kallickal finished with 12 digs.
 
The Baruch College Bearcats will return to action on Thursday, March 12, with a 7:00 pm non-conference match at New Paltz State.
 
The Hunter College Hawks will return to action next Tuesday, March 17, with a 7:00 pm conference match at Medgar Evers College.
