Dominant Rebounding Leads Men's Basketball to Victory in Brooklyn (77-66)

Calvin Jurewicz-Johnson scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Bearcats to a 77-66 CUNYAC victory over the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, New York.

With the result, the Bearcats snap a four-game losing streak to improve to 3-3 in CUNYAC and 9-10 overall. Brooklyn are now 3-3 in CUNYAC and 10-5 overall.

The visiting Bearcats struck first and jumped out to a 21-7 advantage midway through the opening half. They would enter the halftime leading by 10 points (35-25) as
Chris Beauchamp scored 13 points in the opening 20 minutes.

During the second half, Jurewicz-Johnson took over and scored 18 of his career-high 26 points by shooting 4-of-7 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line to help the team earn the victory. His fine play, along with nine points scored by
Mickey Abbatiello in that second half, enabled the Bearcats to defeat the Bulldogs on their home court.

The Bearcats shot 39.4 percent (25-of-60) overall and dominated the boards with a resounding 50-30 rebounding advantage. The Bearcats also imposed solid defense to limit the Bulldogs to only 25.9 percent (7-of-25) shooting in the first half.

In addition to his 26 points, Jurewicz-Johnson also added six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Beauchamp totaled 24 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Abbatiello finished with 11 points and
Granville Gittens scored six points and three rebounds off the bench.

Tyshawn Russell led the Bulldogs with a near double-double of 23 points and nine rebounds.

The men's basketball team will return home to the ARC Arena on Wednesday, January 25, for a 7:30 pm CUNYAC home contest against the defending champions the Cougars of Medgar Evers College.
